I recently scored a piece of manzanita root and spent some time trying to figure out what to make from it. I’m really not an “artsy” type of person and most of the things I make are utilitarian at best and neanderthal more often than not.

Somehow this just sort of came into being as I was playing around. The base is a piece of walnut and the rest is made from the root. I added an application of danish oil and then a few applications of wipe on semi poly. It stands about 8” high and maybe 6” across the root. The void in the lid was cause by a small piece of quartz rock embedded in the wood.

Cool! You mixed the decorative and utilitarian with the cultured and Neanderthal quite successfully. Thanks for sharing.

Lew: A beautiful Piece of art from an “Ugly” piece of wood. I got a small piece of root and haven’t figured out what to do yet.

Nice looking choice.

Beautiful, Lew! I hope you found (and removed) the quartz before you put a tool to it!

Absolutely beautiful! Artfully executed from such a unique piece of wood. Your talents are evolving to a higher level with each project.

A ha, you just became artsy!! Very nice work on that root, Lew. I’m thinking a lot of roots have great character if you can just get all the dirt off to saw them up.

Cheers, Jim
