Spent most of the weekend up north, Mackinaw and the Soo but wanted to get something done in the shop when I got back so knocked out a small Bird Cage Awl. Not sure if I’m really happy with it. Started with a small scrap piece of 3/16” Music Wire. I tried to spiral grind it but it’s just too short to get a grip on. Maybe a longer piece will look better.

That is a nice workable length for an awl. Fits you hand well and you can keep you index finger right near the point!

That is a nice workable length for an awl. Fits you hand well and you can keep you index finger right near the point!

Thanks, it is but that was shear luck. I a bit surprised at how well it works though I shouldn’t be because we use to hammer nail tip to make drill bits. I just finished a longer awl that I really think is just too long … but it looks good. I got the spiral grind going. Will post pics later.
