Chess Table

This is my first attempt at designing and building a chess table. The checkered top is made of hard maple and walnut. The basic table structure is made from cherry, stained a brown maple and finished with 5 coats of a wipe on polyurethane. The checkered top is floating in the cherry frame to allow for expansion and contraction. The first top was too tight and it cracked the frame when the humidity subsided so needless to say I had to remake the top with a floating feature like a panel in a door.

Looks great! sorry to hear about the first top – but floating this one should ensure a good resistance to that expansion trouble.

Matches the other tables in the room nicely and the cherry framing really looks classy. Nicely done.

Beautifully done.
That’ll provide hours of entertainment and it compliments the room nicely.

Great looking table I’m making 2 boards right now out of Purple Heart & Rock Maple. With frames on them. I like your design!

Beautifully done Mel. It fits in perfect with your other furniture. A good solution for the expansion problem too. It seems obvious, but I’m not sure It would have occured to me in that particular situation. Are you making custom chess pieces for it too?

Only one minor suggestion if you ever build another onel include drawers on each player’s sides to hold the pieces when not in use.
Beautiful job.
