Large Mirrored Door Upper Case in Cherry

I finally got around to making the upper case for a large Dresser/Case combination I designed a couple of years ago.

The case is made from Pennsylvania Cherry with Sapele adjustable shelves.
The case is about 48” high, 14” deep and 45 “wide.
It was made to fit on top of the lower chest of drawers.
The case is fully dovetailed, and I did a lot of carving on the front of the case and mirrored doors.
The carvings are all variations of Celtic knots, and weaves and trinity themed. This was a tribute to my Irish heritage after Ireland turned out to be my predominant ethnic trait through analysis.
(Always thought I was more German from my dad’s side, but my mom’s side won out by a large margin..haha)

The finish on the case was liberal coats of Linseed Oil (Linseed oil really brings out the beauty in Cherry I think)
I then top-coated it in the witches brew of Linseed oil, Polyurethane and Miner Spirits mixed in equal amounts.)
Finally I always put a couple of coats of finishing wax on top.

The mirrors for the doors started out as one large mirror that was cut down to fit the piece and I think it was that addition that enhanced the carvings.
The mirrors are plate glass and weigh a ton.

Cherry was easier to carve then I thought it would be and I plan to incorporate carving into some future pieces.
I got the idea from watching videos by Wood by Wright. He has a good channel.

The photos didn’t come out as nice as I had hoped. The case is beautiful in person.
I hope you like this piece and thank you for looking at it.
Eric

Nice work Eric, a very handsome case!
I know how heavy those mirrors can get. We have a hug one in our master bath.

You did a great job Eric. Hat’s off for your carving too. You’re a patient man my friend. Your choice of finish for this cherry wood is smart because it really makes popping out the wood grain. You were brave to get into building inset doors too, what is quite tricky, but you proved you have the skill to do so. Is there any reason why you didn’t cap it with moldings?
In two words, the way you built it, it’s a masterpiece.

Best,
Serge
