DVD Cabinet

I designed this piece due to the need for DVD and Blu-ray storage. When I started designing it I decided to incorporate storage for CDs as well. Each drawer can hold about 70 DVDs or blu-rays, about a total of 350 discs. The top most drawer can be reconfigured to hold about 150 CDs. I chose to carve or shape a design into the drawer fronts. To me the design appears to be a smiling frog. At first glance most seem not to notice the smile. I also designed the handles to match the cabinet (Purpleheart and maple).
I decided to use full-extension drawer slides, wouldn’t want to have to remove 5 or more DVDs just to get to the one I really want to watch. Cabinet is made from Walnut, Maple and Purpleheart.

24” D x 22” W x 47” H

I have another set of drawers already made for a matching piece. I told my wife I could make one with a sad face for its partner. That idea was quickly turned down. I haven’t decided how I will design the next one. I just know it will somehow match this one.

Before someone asks, no we don’t have enough DVDs / Blu-rays to fill the case, just planning ahead. :-)

I like it, the frog gives it some character. Great piece of work.

You might as well make it for planning ahead – because you’re certainly going to have that piece in your family forever! It’s amazing!! I REALLY love how you handled the purpleheart. Especially the stripes. Absolutely tops.

Great looking cabinet. The wood combination works well together. You must like frogs. My son called the other day and told me he went to a frog show in San Diego this past weekend.

It’s a great looking cabinet. The combination of wood is awsome.
I see the smile on the top drawer but the whole thing looks like a happy python.

Really great work.

Thank you all for the complements. It always make me feel better about the amount of time I spent on a piece to hear people like it.

alexsutula, as long as when you say “take them” you mean the design idea and not really meaning stopping by my place and taking them off the cabinet. Then no I don’t mine. :-)

Wow, what a great looking cabinet. Love the combination of woods, and the carving in the face… Just beautiful.
