Got the first one done, carved, spit and polished!
The piece of poplar firewood came from my brother Mick’s winter cache of firewood. A tear came down from his eye when I selected the wood, so I cut him a blank for him to carve when I was in Winnipeg and took the other half to Calgary. This is the result.
The poplar had many features that I had to contend with, but the challenges presented were met with fervour and the wood won the battle. Why? The piece had many characteristics, like colour, grain, spalting, insect damage discolouration, and a live edge. All of these factors had stymied my creativity so in the end I let the wood do the talkin’!
I kept the edges, i.e. sole, lace-up edge thick to fit in with the boldness of the style. The lace up edges have a gentle curve to them to show a bit of sexy sway to them and giving the inner boot a peek to the inner self.
So an ordinary piece of poplar firewood saw it’s redemption to exist on someone’s mantle for a long time to come.
Enjoy!
The ‘Mad’ Bootman!

To the Shop for the next one. Stay tuned!
