Maple and Purpleheart floating bookshelves. Pretty simple and fun project. Used the router table to cut the channel, biscuit jointer for the butt joint, drilled a while in the purpleheart and attached a simple knob. Pretty straightforward and simple to do.

Is a biscuit going to give you enough shear strength to support books leaning against it?

Yes, they hold up fine. The books stand vertical and are sandwiched between the vertical maple piece and the 2” block of purpleheart. So there is really very little if any pressure on the maple piece. They work fine.
