I have made a number of small boxes like this that display a 4” tile. But this time, I was commissioned by a client to make a similar box using an 8”, 3lb tile! And, they had certain size requirements for the contents area.

I started by sketching drawings of this project both to meet the client’s needs, keep the whole thing looking proportional, and, avoid having this thing topple over when someone opened a lid weighing in at 4lbs! I was rewarded for my efforts as the box is very stable when opening.

The entire box is quarter-sawn white oak. The hinges are Brusso JB-107 (beautiful!). The finish is a mix of dye, shellac and lacquer. Completed with two additional coats of spray-on satin lacquer and then Briwax.

This was a stressful build and I’m happy it met my expectations and those of my client. Thanks for looking!

Jerry, excellent craftsmanship! We have that tile and my first thought is that I wouldn’t want that to be in a box lid because of the weight, but it looks like the Brusso hinges will keep the tile safe.

The colors on the tile really go well with the wood. The tile and hinges are worth a small fortune!

Thanks for the kind comments! Dick – No walnut stain, mixture of dyes, lacquer and shellac. Photo of open box added above. I put a piece of blue suede covered cardboard in the bottom. Art – I thought the weight would be a problem too, but the size of the lid makes it work just fine. And yes, those hinges are beefy!

Hey Jer,
Your client should be ecstatic! I can say I saw the “before” and your skill and wonderful shop created the “after”. How much oak did you have left over? Proud to call you my wood buddy!

Don
Actually used the entire 8’ board. Doesn’t take long to use up a board 15” at a time! Thanks for your kind words!

This tile box is so beautiful, creative, and nicely done. It’s a real eye catcher and exhibits a lot of craftsmanship.
