A buddy of mine (fellow LJ Aidan1211 Robert Porter) makes tools and asked me to make some boxes for him. We decided on cherry with box joints for the first group of 6ish. I forgot how many. I used the William Ng version of a box joint jig for a little more than half the box joints. The rest were done by hand because the inside to outside joint kept blowing out of the face.

When I told him I felt a lot better cutting dovetails by hand than box jointing he was all for it.

I sent the numbered pieces and he glued them, trimmed the dovetails and finished them.

These boxes were for some plumb bobs he made.

For these puppies

This one has a wheel to roll the string up on. Pretty sweet. Hopefully he gets a minute to make some tools for his boy :)

First time working with cherry. Love it.

Those boxes look great and are a fitting place to store a beautiful tool. Do you know what finish he used on the cherry?

Brit, we talked about garnet shellec. I’ll ask him but by the look I think that’s what he used.

The box looks slick Fridge! I’ll pretend that I believe there are 5 others you did as well.

Very cool bobs too! In fact, even the felt bags are sweet.

Beautiful wood, box, bob, all of it.
I remember the first time I used cherry after working with nothing but mesquite until then, I thought – holy crap, no wonder everyone loves this stuff.

Hell yeah. I blew through the boxes as fast as I could and at the end of paring out the waste the joinery looked great. Didn’t really have any negative qualitys for me as far as joinery goes.

I was sold when I tried some garnet shellac. I tried blond and it was “ok”. Then I tried the garnet and it looked a good.
