I like the look of this wood. My memory about Osage Orange is my chain saw throwing sparks while I was cutting down a live tree. Although the wood is hard. the sparks were likely my fault with a loose or dull chain. Did you turn it green or …?

Interestingly, the owner of the sawmill where I got this turning blank said the same exact thing about the sparks. All the wood that I buy from the sawmill (Muterspaw Lumber, Xenia OH) is kiln dried. This is honestly the first time that I’ve ever turned Osage Orange and I really didn’t have any trouble turning this piece. I used smaller cut offs to make some pens and I did have trouble keeping them from breaking due to the swirling grain pattern.

Later I learned that this wood will turn brown as it ages, but for now it looks pretty cool!
