Another knife

Another knife for the toolbox! Since I started carving, I have always been interested in the shape and look of Helvie’s knives, and particularly the Gerald Sears signature series. I finally decided I was running low on knives and I contacted Rich Smithson about making one just like I wanted! This is the smaller Gerald Sears model with black end caps and a maple handle. The blade is a 2 1/4”, like the one in my Roger Stegal signature series knife. We discussed getting it custom wood-burned, and Rich suggested that I should order it without any burning or finish and do it myself. Here is what I came up with. It does make my toolbox look better! Thanks for looking!

The knife was purchased as a custom order from Helvie Knives. Basically, it was just a combination of a handle style and blade he already makes, with my choice of materials and no finish on the handle, all for $40. But he will make whatever shape blade and handle you want, if you can’t find something in his extensive line of knives. I think he may sell you just the blade also.

Well, I’m afraid I’m gonna wear them out! It doesn’t hurt to have a spare, just in case.

Mike, this knife is a beautiful piece. You have done a wonderful job on that handle.
