My wife wanted a new phone stand since she gave all of the other ones I’ve made her away. I found a piece of 12/4 walnut cut off and figured lets give this a try. Rough sketch on the wood after planing down the end to a flat surface, cut it out with a jig saw. When I went to smooth out the trunk with a spindle sander, grain orientation was wrong and it snapped off. Had to use my block plane to flatten the stub and attached a piece of scrap sapele. I think the contrasting trunk makes for an interesting feature.

The ears were carved with chisels and the eye was drilled on the drill press. Shaping was a mix of chisels, spindle sander, and hand sanding.

Finish is enough tung oil that it stopped getting soaked in.

That’s a great looking phone stand—I love the elephant and his trunk!
