Project Information
Found a stash of wood left behind from a woodworker who'd passed. This was a dusty old piece of what I'm nearly 99.9% sure is cherry. I love it because the wood had a lot of character and even though it'd appeared to have had a hard life, it's defects are what makes it so beautiful to me. The lift is made of ebony and retains the bandsaw marks. The top is 3 pieces of the Cherry jointed then surrounded by an ebony inlay.
The bottom is 3 pieces of old spalted pallet wood, jointed and splined together.
Haven't done a box in awhile so was nervous about the hinges, but did them by hand with some marking tools and sharp enough marples chisels. I've read you should buy your hardware first and mill the wood to work with it….....nah, that's got to be an old wives tale…where would the fun be in that.
The finish is BLO/MinSpirits/Poly blend sat for 30 minutes and wiped off. Only one coat, because it never gets too cold here in SC.
Thanks for peering.
