My wife and I got a number of steak knives for our wedding and had no home except loose in a drawer. Being Mr. Safety, I could not have people sticking their hands in a drawer full of sharp knives. This is purple heart with a piece of tiger maple trim I found at Home Depot. I had trouble cutting the slots in the maple, so they’re not straight. I used my Dremel and some small files to get it near the way I wanted, but it’s not perfect. I suppose next time I should build a jig and use a spiral cutting bit. Hey, I’m learning. Anyone have good suggestions for cutting slots for the knives without slicing the wood in half and running it across the table saw blade?

Newlywed? Give it time, you’ll both think of other places you’d like to put the knives.

Very nice!
I made a knife block for multiple sizes. I used a variety of wood, & routed out the patterns before gluing. If you want you can see it in my projects. 56 years here!

I would probably make a jig or template and use a spiral bit for clean cutting.
Nice looking project.

I guess that is why you see most knife blocks glued up in many pieces. I have a knife block on my to do list.
Here is an idea, use a drill press and cut a deep hold for a dowel, then cut a knife slot in the dowel and insert the dowel in the hole just cut, then glue up the top to cover the dowel. I am not sure how that would work but on first pass (in my mind) it seem like it might be fun to think about.
<grin> How about one of them water drills or a laser drill <grin>, I know a light saber..
