I have just finished this chess ensemble. The playing pieces and storage box handles are in Aluminium and Brass. The playing surface is Maple and Sapele. The case is Mahogany. Storage boxes for the playing pieces are made from poplar with Maple and Sapele faces and have green flocking on the interior with a Sapele/birchplywood lid. The playing pieces are in an Art Deco styling. I am fortunate to have access to a metal lathe to turn the playing pieces.

Beautiful chess board. Metal figurines are just outstanding.

Alan, you are a craftsman and a chess geek, LOL! You’ve made a number of these in different styles. Have you had issues with expansion and contraction? If so , what is your solution?

Thanks everyone…DocSavage- I’ve made these boards in solid wood and in veneer. The solid wood designs have a 1/4” recessed lip that fits into dados in the surround four walls allowing for expansion. The veneered sets -including this one survive without the recessed lip..
