This is a project that started as a demo at the turning guild of an inside out turning. I did the inside about 2 years ago and just got it out to finish it when it decided what it wanted to be. The body is made from 4 pieces of red female box elder and the finial and base are made from jarrah. The “burner” is brass pipe with a brass disc pressed in to hold the incense cones. It has 8 10 mm rare earth magnets epoxied in to keep it together. Just give the top a 1/4 twist and it comes right off. Set it back on and it snaps to where the magnets line up.

It is finished with Danish oil and clear lacquer.

Cheers, Jim

Nice that it finally decided, Jim! Turned out beautifully. Does the smoke come through the holes in the top? Thanks for sharing.

Nice job Jim. Some of the nicest projects are the ones that take forever to get back to.

Really cool object Jim.
Great design and outcome.

I Like it a lot and yes I know about those projects on the shelf that don’t know what they want to be but in time they get done and turn out well

I agree with Lew, great designing efforts Jim. Well done. But it did take 2 years. LOL.

Jim…what a beauty!!!! Turned out really well. Great shape….I can see the Hot Air Balloon. There is also something Spiritual about the shape. A bit like at a War Memorial where there is an Eternal Flame in a Shrine.

Again that Box Elder is Beautiful.

Thank you all for the nice comments. This piece was covered with chips under my other lathe and I finally found out how to finish it after seeing the incense burner I made for my daughter many yeas ago. There are about 40 roughed out bowls sitting there too but they will have to wait their turn!
I have a 2 piece IO turning made from a round mesquite log that I fastened together with hose clamps and wedges against the round side for the first cut and it has not said what it wants to be yet.

Hi Candy. the plan was for the smoke to come through the 5 holes in the top, but there is so much , it comes out all over. The side hoes are much much bigger. Training smoke is like herding cats!!

Cheers, Jim
