Just wipped-up this spalted maple rustic picture frame today. I was stacking wood this morn and I started to look at the pile in a different light, what with all these posts of projects using reclaimed wood, I thought Mhmm. These pieces have been in the cycle for 3 yrs and are all that was left of last years heating season, about 1/8 cord, all maple (I burn over 5 cords a season). I decided to open up a couple of promissing looking pieces and this is what I found. Went real rustic, solid 1” thk x 2 1/4” wide, half lapped joints, no sanding or planing, even left the burn marks. Technicaly its not done, after all its fathers day and I’m pooped. I plan on putting in walnut pegs and I only wiped-on 1 coat of tung oil, really popped out the spalting.
2nd pic is of what it looked like this morn.
Turned out so good I may rescue more.
