French cleat book boxes

My wife wanted something for all the books and knickknacks and junk that a 5 year old boy ends up with. We went back and forth for a while before one night it hit me to take what I had done in my shop and apply it to his walls. So we went with french cleats painted to match his wall and a flexible series of cases and shelves that we can change as we need to.

Since I was putting the cleats into the wall solo (using 4 inch lag bolts into the studs), I wanted a way to evenly space the slats, ensure keeping level and hold the slat on the wall while I attached it. The jig (made 4 of them to space out evenly between the cleats) is image #6 and they are in use in image #2. They worked out pretty well!

The boxes themselves are pretty damned sturdy (glue and pocket screws as well as braces across back on top and bottom) and hold all of his stuff with room to grow.

All of the wood is scrap wood from other projects, leftover paint. The only new cost was the lag bolts (and the time.. always with the time…)

Good solution to store a lof of stuff. Have a boy as well and never can seem to have enough room for swords, rocks, insane lego machines, dinosaurs and rusty metal..

We clearly live in the same world of kids… my wife wants a kitchen table but my son wants me to focus on making him a sword rack and my daughter wants a Lego organizer.

Pretty cool look- you can rearange it from time to time when one layout gets bored.
