To start the roughing out process I mark the shape of the shoe on the under side of the boot blank. This is done to ensure that you don’t carve away too much of the bottom edge which will be required for the glue-up. Also I mark out the left and right boot to help in shaping the boot, i.e. big toe vs. little toes.
Next I mark out the toe cap with a centre line and guide lines to follow when rounding out. Now you see the importance of toe designations. I also mark with hash marks the wood to be removed in the lace up area. This is entirely the choice of the carver whether or not you want an ‘insy’ or an ‘outsy’ curve. This step also is the start to the upper curve of the vamp. Picture 4 shows the amount of wood to be removed to start the process. Result of this roughing out is shown in pictures 5 and 6.
The boot blank is now starting to look like an old boot. The tongue wood will be thinned and refined and the final sculpting and shaping will follow. The juncture of the toe cap and vamp will be rounded for fit and all that remains is the finishing.

Back to my carving shed. Until next time , I remain,

The Bootman.
