This is on old project from 5 years ago. Before I actually got into woodworking, but after I had basic tools…so i suppose this is probably my first real woodworking project.
5 years ago, a very close friend of mine, Chris, was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. In an effort to raise money for he and his wife, we held various fundraisers, silent auctions and sold donated items on ebay.
For 10 years I’ve worked in the professional motorsports industry. So as we were collecting items I had the ability to get some pretty nice looking pieces autographed by current and former IndyCar drivers.
Chris was watching me get all these items….then give them away. (not really give them a way, just send them on down the river in return for a small…or large…donation!) So, I decided to surprise him with a piece that was for him to keep. I got my hands on a damaged brake rotor, cleaned it up and asked Al Unser Jr. to sign it to Chris with a small message. I used a spray-on clear coat to seal the autograph and message.
Then built, here is the wood part, the stand from a 4×4 post, used some stain and lots of poly. There are small wedges in the slot on either side of the rotor to keep it from rolling away. The quote on the front is one that Chris had hanging on his wall around that time during his rehab.
I never took any pictures of it when I built it and it recently made its way from his former office into his new home office, so the last time we were over their house, I snapped some photos. It spent the last 5 years on a shelf with plants that get watered…hence the water spots on the back.
It is amazing to look back at how I made and finished this simple piece…and how I would do so many things different now.
Thanks for looking.
