Today’s completed project. Red Tidewater Cypress from Hogan Hardwoods in Lafayette.
This is one of six cypress boxes I cut and glued together.
I like wood hinges but cypress will never work for a hinge since it is too soft and wood hinges need a more dense wood. I chose these simple metal hinges since they only open to 95 degrees.

I like it. More of a random look on the carving.

Super build! Very unique design and construction. Did you make the hinges of Cypress? And, I really love Cypress as I have a lot of reclaimed removed from my home when it was bricked. The Cypress was installed in 1952 when brought from LA.

I tend to be obsessed with having fun in my barn making stuff. Catching up for lost time from doing flood renovations

Cypress doesn’t work good for wood hinges…too soft. Every so often i get on a “hinge making binge” and make hinges out of every wood scrap in my shop that isn’t large enough for a box. This really helps discover what is and what is not good hinge wood.

Gorgeous box… I love the smell of cypress as I work it.
