Cutting dovetails requires being bent over the workpiece for prolonged periods, which can be backbreaking after some time. Therefore, I prefer to do this sitting rather than standing. This however requires a relatively high stool, due to the height of the bench. For some of the other work, on the other hand, a lower stool may be preferable. I therefore constructed an adjustable stool, using some leftover oak floorboards. The seat slides up and down and is fixed in place using a wooden clamp system. The height is continuously adjustable between 45 and 75 cm.

That is a beautiful piece. Well done. Style, function, inventive.

I would love one in my workshop but I reckon the wife would snavel it with “that’s too nice for out there”.

Nice adjustable stool! I’ll probably just keep switching among the three different stools I have in my shop, but I’m tempted to make an adjustable one and free up some space…

You mean I could sit on a stool in my workshop and work??? Whoa that would be nice!!!

I’ve often considered a stool but the work tops I currently have don’t have any overhang, a little design flaw I forget about when I was building them. Some day…..

Neat job B’58. Impressed with the adjustability mechanism.

Years ago I made an adjustable stool with wooden threads for a similar purpose. Nowadays it’s just a “showpiece” at the one height to rest the car keys on.
