OK, I’ve decided the bench is finished. Some details are in the blog about it.
Here’s the basic rundown: frame is made from Ipe, the legs are black walnut (except one leg in cherry), and the slats are fir
The frame is was finished with Penofin, and the top (fir slats) were finished with spar varnish.
Hope it lasts at least through the season :)

Very nice.
I made all of our lawn furniture out of ipe over 10 years ago. It is still in absolutely perfect condition (other than needing a cleaning). I’m confident this furniture will last longer than I will.
With ipe, the only reason to treat is to preserve the color. If left untreated it will turn gray (which some people like). With or without treatment, this stuff last virtually forever.

Thanks Rich.
You’re right about the ipe lasting. The deck it sits on is also ipe. And I did finish it because I wanted to keep the color. I liked the grain along the rails. The black locust legs certainly don’t need finish either, able to last in wet conditions without any treatment for 75 years.
