My neighbor just built a nice planter box behind his house and my wife saw it. So, she decided that we needed to replace our flowerbeds with planter boxes that covered the old flowerbeds. This decision was made at 1 pm on a Sunday. So, I went to the big blue box store and bought some treated 2×4 x 8. I also purchased 4 packs of the wainscoting that is made of plastic, same stuff I used in my kids bathroom walls because it is waterproof and easy to clean. I built a basic box structure with all my 2×4s and then cut the wainscoting to size. I covered the bottom of it with multiple layers of super duty 6 mil plastic. I hope this will keep some of the weeds out of it. Once the box was built and the sides were on I trimed it out with the 1×4x8 Royal PVC board. Used a little white DAP to seal any gaps in the front, but left the gaps in the back to allow rainwater to drain. Entire project was done by 7 pm.

The planter was 10” high X 8’ long X 21” wide. The result came out pretty good and now I have a rot resistant planter box that matches the outside of the house. It should last for many years to come.

My neighbor laughed at me about one upping his boxes and as punishment I had to go help him move 2 yards of river silt to fill the bottom of his box! LOL

Have your say...
