CNC - Half Wood, Half Printed

Some months ago I bought one of these cheap 3D printer kits. This worked fine, but after seeing that printable CNC I knew that something was still missing in my shop :-) So I downloaded the STL files and started printing while waiting for the mechanical and electrical parts to arrive.

Soon most of the parts arrived and were wired for testing. Everything worked fine – but I was still printing. It took around 3 weeks to print all the PLA parts. I did not print all around the clock, just when I was at home, probably it took a total of 150 hours. So take your time if you intend to build one yourself.

The original dimensions provide a work area of around 550mm * 550mm which is fine for most applications. But I want to be able to work on a piece of furniture so I extended all dimensions: the width is as big as you can get with standard 1000m rods and results in usable 705mm. The depth gives me around 980mm of space. The height range is 120mm and reaches around 20mm higher from the ground as the original.

Since everythig is bigger than the original, I built some kind of torsion box as base. Additionally I doubled the rails on the sides to minimize bending. Most of the wood is solid birch plywood, just the bottom is cheap OSB.

I had to modify some parts and created several other smaller pieces for the endstops and wiring. If I need to move this monster, I can unscrew and unplug the complete X axis.

All the files can be downloaded from my Thingiverse project

It is “projects” and ‘people: like this that is the direction of woodworking!
