I always see lots of pallets on Craigs List for “free”. I’ve always wanted to build something out of them because it seems such a waste to throw them away or burn them.
So, this is what I came up with.
I know I know. Pallet wood is not necessarily the best to use for direct contact with soil or water; so…
I made the boxes,
Then treated them with a water based wood waterproofer,
Finally, I had some landscape fabric laying around, so I lined the inside with that.
I expect that they should last at least two seasons… Then I can throw them into the burn pile.
The best part of this project was that the wood was free, and everything else I had laying around;
So… essentially FREE!!!
Oh, BTW it took about two pallets to complete this project.

very cool.
these look like pine pallets, are they?
some pallets (for heavier loads) are hardwood – mostly oak, and may be better fitting for this purpose. I believe these should last longer than 2 seasons, but I would love to hear your experience with them as I also have (hardwood) pallets available here

They are pine.
I did get one oak pallet but there was not enough wood there to make this project.

Thanks for the comments LJ’s
Hope this might inspire others to think of ways to recycle and reuse
Houtje – It takes a little (ok… a lot of) “elbow grease” and some otherwise not-so-gentle prying with a flat bar (wonder bar) and then back hammering the nails so they may be pulled without gouging the wood. Also, I also hold the nail shaft with a pair of pliers while back hammering so I don’t bend the nail over.
It takes about 20min to completely disassemble one pallet.

I’ve been considering the same thing. I haven’t found any pallets yet, though.

How can you tell an oak pallet from one made of pine?
