Posting this for Cronk – He built this for a “friend of the shop”. The slab is Black Walnut from a tree cut some 30 odd years ago. The top is floated about ½”, the base has an 8 degree taper to compliment the top. The stretcher is also a live edge piece with a through mortise & tenon. It looks great, he did a wonderful job!

This is real nice. Love the rustic/natural look.

When you say “the top is floated…” what do you mean by floated?

Thanks all – Dennis, this is Cronkman’s project all the way – if it is rustic or “artsy” my brain shorts out, but even I admit that his vision paid off

Bryano – not sure what it weighs, but you don’t want to pick it up by yourself! (maybe 160 awkward pounds or so)

Dadoo – We ran cross pieces on the long stretchers and “lifted” the top off the stretchers and runners 1/2 inch. From certain views, this gives the illusion that the top is “floating”.

I must agree!!! That is a good looking table. The “friend of the shop” is very lucky.

-- No piece is cut too short. It was meant for a smaller project.

Love this table. Stick a bowtie on that check and you’d have a George Nakashima for sure. Beautiful piece Cronk.

I was thinking the same thing, Chip.

Beautiful table. I like it, but would hate to have to move it around the living room. My wife is always “rearranging the furniture” :-)). Nice work.

I appreciate the wonderful comments on the table. In many cases – as many of you know – the wood dictates what is to be done with it. Schroeder says he has no “artsy ” interest but I would not be with out his “eye and intuitive feel for how things should go together. some day when he is “older and wiser” he will realize that he has a feel for the good life also. Could not do without his “young” wisdom and judgment in the Gnarley Wood shop
