Carved Shell Box

This box started off as a scrap block of maple about 3” cubed. I cut the shell outline out of the whole block and then carved the shell shape into the top of the block.. Once the carving was completed, I cut the shell off the block and about an 1/8” off the bottom, hollowed the center and glued the bottom back on. I embedded a couple of rare earth magnets in the shell lid and the rim of the box to act as a sort of hinge or retainer. It’s a little weaker than I would like, but accomplished the basic goal of keeping the lid with the box.

Maple grain does not usually gain my admiration, but this turned out to be attractive. The finish is Formby’s Tung Oil Finish over 1200 grit sanding.

Thank you for the kind comments all.

Oldrivers, I expect you’ll like the next one better yet as it is made from cherry.
