Bookcase for my Mother

This is the first bookcase I built. My mother wanted something with a good bit of storage and of course built by her son. So this is what I came up with. I drew it up on sketchup which helped alot in the building process. It pretty much allows you to cut all of the major pieces to the exact dimensions (sides, top, bottom, back, shelves and such), everything except the drawers.

The case itself was built from 3/4” birch plywood with a 3/4” popular face to hide the edges of the plywood. The smaller cubbies were made from some 3/4” popular. Drawers are constructed from 1/2” plywood with 3/4” birch ply faces in a full overlay style. The grains all match with the drawers to make a nice effect. Full extention slides allow my mother to put whatever she wants in the drawers and get access to them easily.

Sailor,

Great looking bookcase. Just about what I am looking to build for my first Real Wood Project. Can you direct me as to where I can get the plans for a large (8’ wide) bookcase or one like yours?

BTW, I assume by your LJ name that you are a “Sailor”, what kind of boat do you sail? I have a Nonsuch 30 which is a Cat Rig, have you ever seen one?

Thanks,

Ken

Woodman,
I can’t direct you to plans because I drew up my own plans. Partly on paper, partly in my head.

I am a “Sailor” lol

I have a Montgomery 17 currently. I just sold a Southcoast 22 today and a Watkins 29 a few months ago. I am now VERY satisfied with my little Montgomery. I Googled a Nonsuch 30, that is a gorgeous boat! I have never seen a cat rig on a boat that size, it looks like a giant Compac with a cat rig, very very nice!

If your interested, I have a blog with my M17 on there and some other stuff here I also have a small sailing site here, Sailography.

Fair WInds!
