I got really tired of my wifes books laying all over the place and decided to finally take on the “bookshelf project”. I built it from Birch plywood then dressed it up with some molding and store bought legs then 3 coats of poly. I wanted a contemporary but soft look, so that’s where the molding and legs came into play. Overall, I was very happy with how it turned out for my first piece.

Came out great Paul.
No more lost books & she’ll admire your ingenuity even time she makes a selection.

Nice shelving unit you’ve built for the book collection.
This looks like a fairly wide span for plywood. Did you add any extra means of support or bracing to help prevent bowing? Have you had any bowing issues?
Just curious.
I’m sure you’re both much happier now.

Thanks everyone. Jonathan-I was worried about bowing too when I built it. Total span is about 5’. I used 1/4” birch for the back and extra nails then crossed my fingers. My wife sure know how to load a bookshelf down and no problems yet, so I think the backing was enough extra support. And you guessed it Jack! She told me last week she’ll be needing another one soon for all the books she’s been buying lately.

I sympathize with your bookshelf woes – my wife is a voracious reader and has littered every room with books. The shelf looks great, now just need to extend it to the ceiling and double it. ;)
