Hi all,
Just so you know that we have other timbers in Oz, here’s a box made in Blue Gum. The border on the lid is red gum I confess. The trays and dividers are Canadian Rock Maple.
Regards,
Rob

Great color. Is that a black light or natural light.

Hi Karson,
The first pic is natural light but with enhanced contrast. The sun was shining diredtly on to the lid and the reflection was too much!

Rob that is a keeper. I really like the wood (timber) selection and execution.

Really nice work, Rob. With that beautiful red color, why is it “Blue Gum”?

Since joining Lumberjocks I have looked around the house to see what I have done and nothing is good enought to put on this site. But everthing I look at seems way beyond my skills. The Box colors pop out and the green felt works well with all the colors. I never see stains on 98% of the projects and I can see why when you have great colors to pick from nature. Keep up the great work.

Thos.,
The Sydney Blue Gum has a greenish-blue leaf and when seen as a group from a distance, they appaear to be a reasonably deep blue colour. We have a mountain range down the East coast called the Great Dividing range. The part of it that lies behind Sydney is actually called “The Blue Mountains” for just this reason. Blue Gum is used for structural timber as well as flooring and furniture.
Dominic,
My philosophy on making furniture is that in most cases, if you need to stain a timber, you probably picked the wrong one to begin with. I try always to let the timber speak for itself. Often, I’ll go to a timber yard wanting to get a particular species for a project and something altogether different will just scream at me that it would be better suited for the project. That piece of Blue Gum sat around for about 8 months before I knew what to do with it.
Regards,
Rob

Rob, Mate, you know how much I love small wooden boxes. Thanks for feeding my insatiable appetite with this outstanding example of the art.
I understand another reason for the hills back of Sydney having a blue tinge is that the gum leaves give off a sap that is carried in the air currents. Viewed from a distance, this mist-like sap-ladened air acts like a blue ‘filter’ making them appear blue in color, or as we spell it in OZ, ‘colour’.

Thats true Don. During hot weather, the trees release Eucalyptus oil into the air, giving a blue haze. It is this oil that makes fires involving gums so fearful. The trees don’t just light up, they explode. Bushfires can travel through the canoppy of a gum forest at up to 50kph (25mph).
