This is a California Claro Walnut entertainment center I made for my son for his first apartment. I started this with my older son when he moved out a few years ago and I built most of the furniture for his apartment in cherry (you can see in my prior projects).

Youngest son gets furniture too (it’s a good incentive to move out apparently!). He chose California claro walnut for the wood for his furniture. This entertainment center is the first piece for his apartment.

The plan is from an old Rockler plan I stumbled across one day. What’s unique about it, and I forgot to photograph it when open, is the center shelf system and top are a separate cabinet that extends out on slides from the rest of the cabinet. This allows for access to all the cables by just sliding out the center/top cabinet and reaching down into the back of the cabinet. No moving the cabinet or reaching through the shelving system to get at the wires.
The sides are veneered claro walnut (I did the veneering) and the top/trim/drawer fronts are all solid claro walnut.

I have an old friend in Davis, CA who harvests and dries claro walnut (thewalnutplace.com) – the wood he’s sold me over the years has been just spectacular. Claro walnut has the most vivid colors and figuring you’ll find in a walnut. It’s a joy to work with also. He’s picked some good matching boards for this entertainment center, a dining table and a desk that will be coming up next. The photo looking down at the top gives a good idea of some of the character in the boards. All were flitches cut from the same log so I can get good bookmatches for the tops. I have about 400 board feet of lumber in this latest batch – all good 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4 stock. Lots to play with.

Thanks for looking.

Nice design and nicely executed. I like the idea of slides for the shelves. Makes hookup of components so much easier. Nice job!

Very nice Gary, I love figured boards, so this is right up my alley.
