Not flashy, but represents way more hours than I thought would go into this (death by 1000 cuts)... Not sure where the idea originated, but I thought it was from the Wood Whisperer. I put a few minor modifications on it like sizes, the plywood tops, and maybe a little overkill on fastening everything together.

Basically put a stud on the outside of the wall and make these plywood/2×4 arms to screw into it. The studs go to the floor where possible to transfer vertical weight, and use 6” lag screws to hold them to the actual wall studs through the drywall. For the arms, I glued the 3 pieces together, then put 4×3” screws in each. Each arm is fastened to the stud with 5 3” screws. There’s about 500 screws total in this…

I chose this design over a simpler, more “conventional” 4-legged garage shelf design because the garage is tight with 2 cars in it and removing the front leg gives us a few less things to bump into as you’re trying to squeeze down the side of the car getting in or out. Removing the front support also keeps the shelves wide open for easy access to the stuff that’s on them. Also, I plan to leave these up for a very long time and our house is built on 100% clay, which is causing a little bit of settling on the concrete slabs. With one side screwed to the wall and the other side supported by the concrete, the shelves would eventually work themselves off-level. This way, they stay true as long as the walls don’t move as much – at least, there is only one point of movement instead of 2 (the wall and the slab).

Love a good simple home upgrade project.
