I was inspired by Jay Bates’s interview with Wayne Brown about “finding that fire.” I had recently completed a shadowbox for a close friend’s retirement and whether it was because I was out of practice or simply because of Murphy’s Law, the shadowbox project fought me from start to finish. When I finished it I was at the point that Wayne Brown eluded to, I was losing the passion. I watched Jay’s video again and decided that I wanted to build a chisel hammer. It did not have to be a show piece but rather another useful tool in the shop and it something I wish I would have had when I was building the shadowbox. The walnut was leftover from my friend’s shadowbox and the maple was leftover from my shadowbox. The build went great and was a lot of fun; more importantly, I found my passion again!

This is a nice shop-made mallet.
