Sliding Lid Box for Violin Tools

Some tools that I need in my new craft as repairer of rental bowed musical instruments need to be too precicely engineered to make myself. These tools also usually cost a bit of money. For this reason I like to keep them safe and separate, so I made a case for my Violin peg shapers and the corresponding peg hole reamer. They are both ‘calibrated’ at a 1:30 taper, so the hole will match the peg.

I used a piece of white drawer wood, possibly oak, and some of my pew mahogany. The sliding lid is a scrap of plexiglas and lets me see what is inside. The finish is spray lacquer. I’ll need to make a second one of these for my cello tools and maybe one for the tail pin reamer for the contrabass. The reamers have exposed sharp edges, so it’s convenient to keep them in a case.

[Below] Why you should always measure twice and cut once. This first attempt ended up too small. On my second try I made the bottom piece FIRST and built the sides around it.

[Below] Two photos gleaned from ebay that show the use of these tools.

It’s a nice practical box for a set of specialty tools. Congratulations.

Thanks, Guys! I just need to find a use for the one that’s too small. Hmm…

Nice work on the tools, its satisfying to create something useful.

Thanks. It feels good to get in my shop again, too!
