Project Information

We are in the process of remodeling our bathroom and were looking at cabinets to replace the old 1960 cabinet that came with the house (see the last picture). But since there was nothing nice or the right size in our price range I thought, I'll just make one myself. So this is my first attempt at building a cabinet. I built it out of maple (you can see the bird's eye detail in the third image) and maple plywood. The door panels are 1/4 Baltic birch plywood. Assembled with numerous pocket holes (where I could conceal them) and glue. The crown is attached with glue and brad nails. The crown detail is just something I came up with on the fly, but I like it. Added a few coats of poly and installed it with a French cleat.

Wow, what a nice upgrade!

I like the bird's eye maple.

Are you keeping those pulls on there, or are you going to change them to a brushed or satin nickel so they match everything else?

Great job on a first cabinet, I'd say.

Anything you'd do differently next time around?

I just looked at the pictures again and also like the fact that you made the shelves moveable. Nice touch!

Thanks for the comments, guys!

@Jonathan The knobs are actually a satin nickel, although the yellow lighting makes them look brass in the photo. Still, they aren't a perfect match, so we'll keep on the look out for something we like better.

Two things I would do differently. First, the next time around, I will spend more time planning the assembly. I had already glued and screwed in the back of the cabinet before realizing that I didn't think about how to attach the face frame, so I ended up adding a few pocket holes where I didn't want them and three brad nails into the face frame, but since it's bird's eye you don't notice the brad nails as much. Second, when I glued the doors they weren't perfectly flat, so I had to add stronger magnetic catches than I wanted in order to make the doors close flush. I will definitely change the way I clamp the doors next time.
