Marines Making Pens

Okay, this is my last post about the Marines I teach to do woodworking (at least for tonight). This year I offered a pen turning class as part of an enrichment program for the Expeditionary Warfare School on Marine Corps Base Quantico. Nobody in the class had ever turned anything on a lathe before and a couple of them didn’t even know what a lathe looked like. So I am particularly impressed with the quality of the pens they produced. I had a husband a wife pair (furry face and his Marine wife pictured) who really got into it and made the very colorful collections of pens. Most of those pens went out as Christmas gifts I believe. The “Most Marine” pen award however, goes to the pens with the light wood and contrasting walnut stripes. The light color wood is from Belleau Wood in France (it is the site of the battle where Marines earned the nickname “Devil Dogs,” given to them by the German Soldiers they faced in battle there). The Walnut stripes come from a Walnut tree from MCB Quantico. There is one stripe on the bottom of the pens and six stripes on the top to represent the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. I am honored to work with these men and women and I am very proud of the final products they produced.

Nice job of teaching the Jarheads Todd, seems natural some of them would make the bolt action pens. I’ll try and look you up next time I’m in Quantico!

That’s a great service you’re providing those men and women. The pens look very cool also!

Looks like they took right to it. Very nice pens and a very worthy cause!

Nice work and hats of to you for doing this with them. Typical of Marines, improvise, adapt and overcome. Alone we are strong, together, very scary…. LOL
