This is my first box, which I made over the weekend out of Koa. I’m pretty happy with it. I haven’t put a finish on it yet, I was thinking boiled linseed oil maybe.
What are your thoughts?

Updated with the finished box. Boiled Linseed Oil and 4 coats of poly.

So much better than my first box. Very well done. As far as BLO (boiled linseed oil) goes I use it a lot. One finish I use regularly is BLO and wipe on poly. I have been pretty pleased with the results.

Keep the projects coming….

BLO and wipe on poly would make it slightly more resistant to scratches. Adding a chain stop or a lid support to the lid and base will prevent the hinges from racking. Inset a rare earth magnet in the base and a steel brad in the lid for a simple lid lock. otherwise, the perfect box.

Excellent job, especially for your first!

BLO would be great. As others have mentioned. poly after the BLO cures will give a little more “depth” and protection.

Nice looking first box. BLO will bring out the wonderful depth of the koa grain.

Great job so far. Can’t wait to see that grain pop once you finish it. I have not yet used BLO, so I can’t directly speak for it, but from what I’ve heard, it should be a great choice for this, as others have already stated.

Post more pictures once you’ve decided upon and applied your finish, please!

Awesome job! Welcome to the addicting and in my case money making world of boxes! Daring of you to try mortising hinges on your very first box! I love Koa to so you struck the right chord with me. Im currently waiting for a maple and curly Koa box to finish gluing!

Keep up the good work!
