A local new store owner asked if I would be interested in building a display unit for their new store. I’m not much on furniture building but after discussing the desired plan and price I decided to go ahead. I’m not sure about the rest of you but I kind of like spending one day in my shop and turning out a completed project the same day. Instant gratification! This project spanned over 4 days, not all full days however.

This is made mostly of Lowes Top Choice 1” x 12” pine. It is actually 2, no 3 separate pieces. Each case 82” tall by 35” wide. This makes transporting the unit much easier. The customer wanted crown molding and I contemplated how to do that throughout the build. Came up with the idea to also make it a separate piece. I saw a Norm Abrams video where he built a set of bookshelves in a similar fashion. I built 1 1/2” face frames to cover over the 3/4 edges of the cabinet and edge banded the removable shelves as well. Pocket holes, and glue make up the assembly and I bought a 23 gauge pin nailer to attach the crown and bead board to the back. The pin nails hold everything pretty well till the glue sets up. It worked great closing up any of the very small gaps on the mitered crown molding.

I was nervous about the crown molding but it actually went quite smooth, just took my time with the setup and measurements. Its sanded to 150 grit, customer is responsible for the finish, I think it will be whitewashed or painted. I’m quite pleased and so is the customer with the way it turned out.

Thanks for looking
