A few years ago I stumbled across a Veritas bench top (complete with vises and bench dogs) at an estate sale. In a hurry to start using it, I hastily assembled a base out of 2×4’s and 4×4’s I had sitting around. And I’ve never been happy with it – it trembled and shook just from looking at it. So when I saw the video for this workbench base I knew it was what I wanted. The folks at my local Shurway Lumber ordered some grade 1 dug fir 4×4’s, and i got to work running them through my Dewalt planer to clean them up a bit. The only stumbling block was discovering that my newly purchased Triton Tools ‘contractor saw’ had too short of an arbor to accept my dado stack. So I was forced to cut all the half-lap joints 1/4” at a time. I preferred this method to using the band saw due to my comfort level with the band saw. The assembly was straight-forward, and the end result is magnificent. I built the bench tall (38”) because I’m 6’4” and hate bending over all the time.

Beefy and quick, solid joinery, very nice. I am also a fan of Chris Schwarz joinery and designs.

The base of this bench is very nice and that top added to it will make a great bench.
