Every year on the last day in April people in many towns here in Southern Germany put up a “Maibaum” (maypole) and have a great “First of May party”. It is a tree cut in the woods and brought to town. It is often painted or carved and there are often crafts signs on it. There is a competition from a local brewery and a jury elects the most beautiful tree. This year we decorated the tree and the surrounding space with the characters of a fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” from the Brothers Grimm. There are witches of course – one in the house, 5 high up in the tree and one carved into the tree. I did the carvings: the witch, a black cat and the year – 2010. It was not too difficult, but it was fun. By the way, the tree ist 23 metres (about 75 feet) high and today I read it won first price – a great honour (and lots of free beer!!!)
PS. Excuse my mistakes in English!

Your English is far better than my German… Oma has been gone too long now I think…

Lovely work on that Maypole… And yes, free beer is a good thing, unless it is an American Light Lager, then pass it up… (We do have some excellent micro brewery beers that are truly world class, but most of the beers that people know as American are truly nasty tasting…)

When my parents immigrated from Germany, 1952, they lived in Minnesota and sent me to a parochial school that celebrated all the traditional Germany holidays and festivals including the Maibaum celebration.

Your Maibaum brings back a lot of memories of both Germany and my time in Minnesota!

Vielen Dank!

Did it again this year. Motto was soap box racing. And we got first price again (the 4th time in seven years)
