I needed to make a woodworking project for an article in Esperanto and I thought this would be a good idea. My wife always likes getting another rythm instrument for her classroom. He kids tend to ‘fight’ over the ones that Mr. Rutan made. For the curious, the article won’t run for some months, but I’ll post here when it does.

I used some drawer wood that I had stashed away. It’s actually pretty good quality plywood, but it came from a drawer nonetheless. Because of its recycled nature, the size of the wood pretty much governs the size of the piece. The angles on the ends were done by eye. I just put a convenient stop block under one corner of the board and ran it through the table saw on my panel sled.

The drum is held together with glue applied to the rabbet joints on the end pieces. I made the rabbets on the TS by nibbling away with my blade. I don’t own a dado set.

I decided to stain the body of this drum because the piece for the top was so light in color. I used some water base mahogony stain that we had from when we refinished our secretary desk for the entryway. Waterbase stain is nice stuff when it comes to clean up. The final finish was spray lacquer.

[Below] Mandatory Glue up photo. This one is different that the one seen previously.

Here’s a picture showing how I made the angled cut on the two long sides.

Good job, Dave! Looks great. How thick is the tapa?

Dave, it looks very creative. I’ve never seen a drum like this and I wish you had a small audio of it – I’d like to hear it.

I like it. Your projects are always interesting. I can see why the kids like it.
