Apple spoonula

Here is an apple wood “spoonula” I carved recently. I loved the way apple wood just gleams after taking a cut with my knife, so I decided to experiment with a tooled finish on this one.

I’m not sure how I feel about it – maybe if I were better at carving it would be nicer. But some areas have fairly large tool marks that I couldn’t refine because every time I tried I’d get tear out! I still carve my bowls with a gouge also, and I just couldn’t make it look as smooth as I wanted it to. So I scraped and sanded the bowl. Nice thing about trying to refine it so much with the gouges is that it took very little scraping!

I have heard it said by other spoon carvers that a spoon that is not sanded or scraped will not get fuzzy when wet. I.e. water will not raise the grain. I have found this to be true, at least for apple wood! I wet the spoon after sanding the bowl, and sure enough, the bowl got a little fuzzy (apple stays very smooth compared to some woods, but it was still noticeable) , but the tooled areas stayed glassy smooth!

Very neat.

Now I will have to try to make some, as I have a decent amount of apple cuts.

Well done! Thanks for the info about sanding and fuzzies. I was confused about your title for a while until the word spoon ans spatula came to me. Makes this a multipurpose tool.

I had not heard that about sanding/not sanding. Thanks for sharing. Nice spoonula, too!
