Well are you ready for more. Lets get going. Now that your handle is in place its starting to look like a plane.
Step 5. Now we need to make a front handle. I had to glue up some small blocks of Jatoba. I then used my lathe and turned the handle out. (Again you can make yours look any way you want). Then I drilled out a hole in the planes front. I put it right in the middle of the plane. You can see my marks.
Step 6. We need some way to hold the blade in. You can use a dowel made from wood or brass. I like the look of brass, thats what I used. Drill out the holes for the brass rod to go in. Then glue it in. Next we need a wedge. I used Jatoba on this as well. Make it any shape you like. But make sure it is dead flat on the bottom so it holds the blade in place. You will need to take your time on this so the blade and wedge fit tight.
Step 7. Sand the whole plane down to 220 grit.
Well thats it for now the next project post will be on finishing the plane and getting the bottom of the plane flat. But check out your nice new tool and the greatest thing is you did it. The next post will be in a few days.

Dave, this is all good stuff!

As a suggestion, you might like the blogging feature. You can add more than 3 photos, and you can tie all of these together in a project that people can follow in sequence.

Just a thought!

I’ve always had this mental block about planes; thinking they’re way beyond me. Thanks to Dave and the other planemaking LJ’s, I’m coming round to thinking I’ll have a go. Thank you for this series.
