Modern Furniture Set

Project by Todd A. Clippinger posted 769 days ago 1181 views 10 times favorited 21 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I finally got some better photos of the modern furniture set that I built. I thought that you might like to see the pieces in their current setting. The original posting was just of photos taken in the shop.

The clients have been very happy with this set and a particular favorite is the curved corner piece with a display in the back.

This set was made to go with the modern coffee table I built. That piece was made from a change in the entertainment center. The console that the T.V. sits on was changed and the original was then made into the modern coffee table. The back was added with a recessed accent line to cover the holes originally intended to allow running wires. This turned out to be a great solution and produced a nice piece of freestanding furniture. This all led to building the rest of the set. YAHOO!

This set was all made with curly maple veneer and I finished it with my favorite – Sherwin Williams T77-F37. This is a pre-catalyzed satin lacquer finish done with 4 coats. This has been a wonderful wearing finish on my pieces but would NOT be recommended for a dining table or for kitchen and bathroom cabinets. It’s durability factor falls a bit short for that.

Remember that the number of finish coats are relative to the thickness that I personally apply it. My finish never has the “plastic” look that so many woodworkers are worried about.

Fantastic set, Todd. I’m really not ordinarily a big fan of modern furniture, but these pieces could make a believer out of me!

Very clean. Very elegant. It appeals to the graphic designer in me. I love the maple veneer too.

Once again, excellent design and craftmanship Todd. The spacing around the doors is perfect, just one sign of good work. This is a very functional design which can be divided later for a different look. I can’t really tell from the photos…is there a space below the top on the curved piece or is that a darker wood inlay?

Hoping to hide this from Pam. I’m not sure I will ever be able to kick it up to this notch. Did you use MDO as the substrate?

Doug, I used baltic birch ply. I like it’s weight and handling characteristics and I have never had a problem with substrate delamination.

I have used MDO before but not as a veneering substrate.
