Got off my high horse and started to carve again – another boot that is.
A friend brought me some Arbutus wood from his lot on the West coast islands. It had fallen unto his property so he decided to bring some firewood back to Calgary. This wood has been sitting in my workshop for over five years in that the climate change had severely altered the already twisted wood.
When I started to plan the boot blank, I was confronted with many cracks in the wood as well as some insect burrows. Arbutus is not short of branches so I was hit with many elements in the creative process. I wanted the cracks to flow with the length of the boot and also wanted to preserve the fullness of the main branch wood which you can see on the right side of the toe cap. Had a lot balance work and still had the grain and colour of the wood talk to me.
Arbutus carves easy so I was able to carve this boot in under three hours. Sealed it with a K.I.S.S. to keep it simple but attractive.
Enjoy!
