Wine Glass Box

A friend I work with asked if I would make a simple box that holds a bottle of wine for him to give as a wedding present. I agreed to make him one but the “simple” request had to go. This is make from walnut and curly maple. The legs are hinged on the bottom (no metal) and fold over the top to hold the lid down. The handle slips into the legs on both sides to hold it all together. This was a new design like nothing I have done before. I just like to challenge (punish) myself I guess.

Here is a video

Wow that’s some box. Certainly nothing “simple” about that box. Your friend must be blown away. I’d love to see how the latch handle works. Video? :)

Well anyway, it looks spectacular and is a wonderful gift for your friend to give.

Congratulations on a fantastic project!

Did you work out the design yourself?

I came up with the design as I went. I used sketchup and AutoCAD to figure out the geometry. If you haven’t used sketchup before, I recommend it. Very easy to learn.

I had a look at sketchup a few years ago and thought it was beyond me but perhaps I should revisit it.

Welcome to LJ. You are going to fit right in …... up around the top somewhere.
This is special work. I like how your mind works.
