Koa from Hawai’i. Walnut from Appalachia probably.
Good lord, that wood is beautiful.

I thought about buying a largish supply of koa about 10 years ago.
I sure wish I had followed through, and I sure cannot afford that now.

Beautiful box, well done. I’d like to see a couple of pictures of it open, to see how it opens and to see the inside.

Thanks, Jim and Rick. I didn’t waste pics on the inside because there’s really nothing to see. The lid just has a basic rabbet on the bottom of it. The highlight is clearly the koa. My wife did her masters and doctoral research in Hawai’i and brought me home some nice pieces. Gorgeous wood.

Very interesting design Josh. Koa is a blast to work with. The prices have really gone up over the years even to us “locals”, but I am always asking friends if they have any laying around. Most comes in short logs, but you never know what it will look like until it’s cut open.

I am making a serving tray for a friend from Koa today in fact.

Josh, it sounds to me like the lid just lifts straight up, then; with no hinges. Seems like a good design approach!
