My Son-In-Law gave me this piece of outrageous black walnut. His Grandfather had cleaned out the wood shop of one of his old friends whom had passed. They figure this wood was laying in the wood shop for 50 or so years. And…...he….....says…....there’s….....MORE!!!!

The hickory is a cut off from some flooring. Love the knots!

That is some truly fine walnut. I applaud your courage to cut it up, I would have let it sit there until it told me what it wanted to be (someone else’s problem 50 years from now 8^)

Nice work!

Wow Your box is so beautiful! I agree with splintergroup every word. I don’t think I would be worthy to bring a blade near it.
It’s like a 50+ year old time capsule.I can see a fire going on inside the wood! Love it! Nice Work!

Amazing! I see why he left that walnut sit for 50 years, I would say he was waiting for the perfect project. You really did it justice with your box. There’s more? I believe I would ask!

OMG! That Walnut is BEAUTIFUL! And you did a great job in showing it off.

I have heard that trees produce such decorative grain patterns when they are stressed.

Now excuse me while I go out in my backyard and bash my two black walnut trees with a baseball bat to try to get them to produce wood like that.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks all for the kind comments. Two of my most favorite woods came together for this box. But then wild black cherry ranks right up there as well. And then there’s spalted curly maple, too. And then…....oh never mind…...
