Yet another gift box. This one is a wedding present for a cousin who is marrying in May. The box is walnut with a cherry lid. Simple mitred drawers, splined sides to reinforce the mitres. The interior is cherry, as is the top. Felt lining for the trays and drawers.
The wood for this box is extremely local. The walnut tree sits 10 feet from my house. Anyone familiar with walnut trees in the South knows that in the late summer it is dangerous to be under the tree. Dropping nuts from 30’ is hazardous. Well, the roof of my house was earning hazardous duty pay for many years as the tree grew taller. So we decided to remove the overhanging branch. As it worked out, that branch was nearly 3 feet in diameter and over 25 feet long. It yielded some firewood, but it also yielded 5 four foot logs which I milled into boards. This box came from one of those many boards. The cherry is also local. It came from a large cherry tree that came down in Hurrican Isabel many years ago. All that wood is nearly gone now, but lives on in several boxes and 2 bedroom suites, a living room, and many really nice bookcases. I love my chainsaw mill!
